I am new to rowing and I want to try it before I commit to membership.
You are welcome to row with us prior to joining. This is provided that you sign the indemnity and the declaration of swimming competence. Contact us at membership@alfredrowing.co.za or call our captain on +27-78 4570047
Am I too old to start rowing?
Not at all. The advantage of rowing is, that you can do it even you got older. It is good for your endurance as well muscle build up. Rowing does not harm your joints and cartilage. The other interesting thing about rowing is that you do not need to be very strong, very athletic or even particularly fit to start. Initially, the challenges posed are learning to balance and improving your flexibility to go through the motions of the stroke. As you gain competence over time your fitness and flexibility will improve and your comfort in the boat and enjoyment of rowing will expand too. We have a number of members in the 70-something age category, and we’d love to welcome you too!
I have previously rowed sweep oar. Can I to learn to scull at Alfred Rowing Club?
The answer is Yes. And vice versa. Make your intentions known to a club captain who will find a suitable teacher for you: captain@alfredrowing.co.za or call on +27-78 4570047.
I want race next season, how to do get into a crew?
Fantastic! We do have a squad of competitive rowers but we also love to see novices move from casual rowing to regatta preparation. Crews come together when several like-minded and committed individuals decide to make it happen. The captain is happy to offer support and encouragement to a crew that is self-organising and committed. Please let your season’s goals known to a Captain, so that suitable club equipment can be assigned to a new crew on a priority basis.
How can I get coaching?
Coaching is available. Either in one by one sessions with a private coach or a club member is available to coach you. Speak to our captain: captain@alfredrowing.co.za or call on +27-78 4570047.
What is the best time of year to start rowing at Alfred Rowing Club?
Our season usually starts around mid-July – depending on the rain, as we can only launch our boats once Zeekoevlei fills up. Our rowing season ends on the last weekend of April, with our participation at National Championships. This is followed by the draw-down which drains the vlei. This is done under the auspices of the False Bay Nature. Reserve to ensure the quality of the water remains optimum for the birds and fish. Read More
